Rurbanism Exhibition – Naotsugu Yoshida
Utsuwa Shoken KAMAKURA
March 20 (Fri) – March 22 (Sun), 2026
Rurbanism presents an exhibition featuring the works of ceramic artist Naotsugu Yoshida.
“Rurban” is a word that expresses the coexistence of urban and rural life.
The term originates from the concept of Rurbanism, proposed in 1915 by the American sociologist Charles J. Galpin. Inspired by this idea, Rurbanism explores a renewed relationship between the city and the countryside within contemporary Japanese life.
It embraces a way of living that enjoys the cultural and design sensibilities cultivated in the city while incorporating the richness of rural life. It may also mean maintaining a connection to the city while establishing a base in the countryside.
Rurbanism was conceived as a concept shop that embodies this emerging way of life.
Through flower vessels and furniture, this exhibition reflects the philosophy of the coexistence of city and countryside. Flower vessels adorn daily life, furniture shapes the surrounding space, and together they gradually begin to reflect the ways people live.
For this first exhibition in Kamakura, ceramic artist Naotsugu Yoshida will present a selection of flower vessels. Alongside his work, we will show carefully selected vintage Scandinavian furniture — including pieces by Alvar Aalto and Hans J. Wegner — as well as lighting by Santa & Cole, the Barcelona-based design editor.
We warmly invite you to experience this exhibition.
