Rurbanism Tokyo Store is pleased to introduce the works of ceramic artist Taro Yoshita.
Born in 1994 in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture, Yoshita grew up in a family that has operated Kinzan Kiln, a Kutani ware pottery with over a century of history. He studied ceramics at Kyoto Seika University, where he developed his understanding of the medium. After graduating, he joined the family kiln, learning traditional Kutani ware techniques while developing his own practice. In 2022, he began his independent career as a ceramic artist.
Surrounded by the colorful overglaze decoration and gold detailing characteristic of traditional Kutani ware, Yoshita became fascinated by the unpredictable expressions of clay, glaze, and fire through his experience with wood firing during his university years.
Since then, he has continued to explore his own ceramic language through ongoing experimentation with glaze formulations and firing techniques.
Yoshita’s works are distinguished by the complex, layered colors and textures created through his glazes.
His Ash-Green glaze brings together soft shades of gray and green, while his Purple-White glaze reveals delicate transitions between pale violet and white. The movement of the glaze, variations in tone, and transformations during firing give each piece its own distinctive character.
These surfaces evoke the colors and textures found in nature, recalling mist, clouds, and weathered stone.
Organic forms defined by gentle curves are complemented by subtle yet expressive glazed surfaces. By combining intentional forms with the unpredictable changes that occur during firing, Yoshita creates a distinctive sculptural expression.
His works bring together the pleasure of everyday use and the appreciation of ceramics as sculptural objects.
To serve food, to arrange flowers, or simply to appreciate their presence as they are.
Beyond any particular function or setting, each piece reveals new expressions through the individual sensibilities and everyday lives of those who live with it.
Rurbanism will continue to introduce the works of Taro Yoshita.
We invite you to explore his works at our Tokyo Store in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa and through our online store.
