Aki Tamiya / Incense Burner A
Description
Diameter (φ) 110mm × Height (h) 125mm Height (excluding lid): 75mm Opening diameter 65mm
An incense burner featuring natural kiln effects, created by contemporary ceramic artist Aki Tamiya.
Working from her studio in the mountains of Shizuoka, Aki Tamiya creates unglazed, high-fired stoneware through a continuous dialogue with clay and fire.
Known as “Yohen,” the natural transformations that occur during wood firing are shaped by the movement of flames, accumulating ash, and changes in temperature and atmosphere within the kiln. Without the use of glaze, these elements create rich variations in color and texture, making each piece entirely unique.
The rounded, pot-like body with a fitted lid has a simple yet sculptural presence. Its surface reveals complex textures formed during wood firing, where the raw strength of clay and the delicate expressions created by flame coexist.
While designed to function as an incense burner, the piece also stands as a sculptural work in its own right. With its lid in place, it brings a quiet sense of tension and warmth to any space.
Embracing the unpredictability of nature and drawing out the full potential of clay and fire, this work embodies the distinctive character of Aki Tamiya's ceramics.
