Aki Tamiya / Lidded Jar
Description
Diameter (φ) 85mm × Height (h) 190mm Height (excluding lid): 165mm Opening diameter 15mm
A lidded jar featuring natural kiln effects, created by contemporary ceramic artist Aki Tamiya.
Working from her studio in the mountains of Shizuoka, Aki Tamiya creates unglazed, high-fired stoneware through a continuous dialogue with clay and fire.
Known as “Yohen,” the natural transformations that occur during wood firing are shaped by the movement of flames, accumulating ash, and changes in temperature and atmosphere within the kiln. Without the use of glaze, these elements create rich variations in color and texture, making each piece entirely unique.
The traditional form of the lidded jar reflects the timeless beauty of ancient ceramics, while embodying Tamiya's distinctive sense of freedom and spontaneity.
The raw, earthy surface reveals both the strength of the clay and the delicate, complex patterns created by fire. Embracing the unpredictability of nature, the work carries a quiet tension alongside a sense of warmth.
Even with its lid in place, the jar stands as a sculptural work in its own right, bringing depth and character to any space.
