A yakishime planter by contemporary ceramic artist Atsushi Ogata.

Born in Tokyo in 1960, Ogata is currently based in Uda, Nara, where he continues to create works using iron-rich native clay, incorporating techniques such as kohiki and hakeme.

Fired in a traditional wood kiln, his vessels possess a quiet yet undeniable presence, bringing depth to a space as they receive and reflect surrounding light, air, and the life of the plants they hold.

This work is a yakishime piece fired without glaze in order to fully reveal the raw texture and expression of the clay itself. The iron-rich clay develops increasing depth through the long firing process, resulting in a form that feels both powerful and deeply serene.

Though wordless, the piece carries a presence that seems to quietly speak to the viewer, drawing one gently into its atmosphere.

Created exclusively for Rurbanism, this is a one-of-a-kind work. Opportunities to encounter Ogata’s planter pieces on the market are exceedingly rare, making this an especially scarce and collectible object.

A quiet sense of life resides within the yakishime vessel.

A small art piece that fits within the palm of the hand — to be lived with alongside plants in everyday life.
