“Black Kesho” by contemporary ceramic artist Shohei Ono is created through a firing process in which the iron contained within the kohiki glaze slowly emerges to the surface. The result is a beautiful gradation between iron markings and a glass-like texture.
Within its deep black surface, a subtle sense of light quietly appears — giving the piece a presence that feels both calm and powerful.

Shohei Ono is known for his rare and deeply personal approach to making, sourcing clay directly from the mountains and creating even the glaze materials entirely by hand.
Through his unique techniques and rigorous firing process, his works embody a distinctive balance of softness and rawness, carrying a quiet yet powerful presence that is unmistakably his own.

This “Black Kesho” planter was specially created by Shohei Ono exclusively for Rurbanism, making it a truly unique and valuable one-of-a-kind piece.

Shohei Ono

Born in Aichi in 1985. Currently based in Kami, Kochi, working as a ceramic artist.
Raised under the guidance of his father, ceramicist Teppei Ono, he has pursued his own path after becoming independent—digging clay from the mountains himself and preparing glazes from raw materials, engaging deeply with nature throughout his practice.

His vessels, shaped with generous forms and imbued with a tangible weight when held, embody both rustic warmth and a quiet sense of tension. They transcend daily use, bringing a powerful presence to the spaces they inhabit. While they function beautifully as tableware, they also reveal new expressions as art pieces—whether holding flowers or standing as sculptural objects—captivating the hearts of those who encounter them.
