Contemporary ceramic artist, Toru Hatta's white glaze and natural glaze.

If white glaze is considered beauty born from human hands, then natural glaze, as its name suggests, is an expression created by the power of nature that transcends human intervention.

During the firing process in a high-temperature wood kiln, the ash from the wood falls onto the vessel, melts, and adheres like glaze. The colors, textures, and landscapes born from this chance occurrence are all unique, showing completely different expressions even among works fired in the same kiln.

Pursuing the "miracle of fire and ash" in a way that cannot be reached by human intention as a work of art――

The natural glaze flower pots vividly embody another charm of Toru Hatta.

Toru Hatta's natural glaze flower pots. This is the first time Hatta has created flower pots, making this a very rare work. It is a precious collection of works specially made for Rurbanism after repeated dialogues with the artist.

Rurbanism will continue to introduce a variety of works, including vases and flower pots by contemporary ceramic artist Toru Hatta.

Toru Hatta

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1977. Currently creating pottery in Sakai City and Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture. He continues to explore diverse expressions that make use of the earthy qualities of materials, such as white glaze, black glaze, natural glaze, and Mishima.

The flower vases fired in a wood kiln possess both strength and complex expressions, radiating a presence as if they have captured a natural landscape. By arranging flowers, the depth is further enhanced, tightening the space while creating a gentle afterglow along with the flowers.
