A brushed white slip planter by contemporary ceramic artist Tomoko Sakai.

Rather than “painting” white slip onto the surface, Sakai uses a distinctive technique of building it up with a brush, almost as if gently layering the clay onto the form.

This piece introduces color to her signature brushed white slip planter. The color settles over the dimensional surface created by the brushwork, bringing a new sense of vibrancy and depth while preserving the raw, earthy character of the clay.

No two pieces share the same brushwork or expression of color. The tactile, textured surface and strength of the clay are balanced by a quiet sense of warmth and softness unique to Sakai’s work.

This is a rare, one-of-a-kind piece specially created for Rurbanism.

Tomoko Sakai
Born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1970. She studied under Naruyoshi Morioka in Wakayama Prefecture and built a climbing kiln in Kagawa Prefecture. After making pottery in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, she has now established a kiln again in Kagawa Prefecture.

The vases created, primarily from stoneware and white porcelain, embody a gentleness within their strength and elegance, adding a dignified presence and warm comfort to daily life.
