Contemporary Ceramics at Rurbanism Tokyo Store

Contemporary Ceramics at Rurbanism Tokyo Store

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Rurbanism will open its first flagship store, Rurbanism Tokyo Store, in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, Tokyo.

To mark the opening, the store will present works by a diverse group of contemporary Japanese ceramic artists, including Ryuji Iwasaki, Shohei Ono, Teppei Ono, Yoshio  Kangawa, Tomoko Sakai, Michikazu Sakai, Aki Tamiya, Fumihiro Tamura, and Toru Hatta.

From vessels made for everyday use to planters that live alongside plants and sculptural objects that inhabit a space, the collection brings together a wide range of works shaped by each artist’s individual approach to clay.

The texture of the clay, the expression of the glaze, and the traces left by wood firing. Though all of these works belong to the field of ceramics, their expressions are far from singular.

Clay, fire, and the human hand. With time and chance layered into the process, each piece takes on a character of its own.

At Rurbanism, contemporary ceramics are presented alongside vintage furniture, lighting, plants, music, and more.

Rather than viewing each work in isolation, Rurbanism explores the new relationships that emerge when objects from different periods and backgrounds coexist within the same space.

The works featured here will be available to view in store from the opening of Rurbanism Tokyo Store on Saturday, September 19.
