A flower vase from the “Shirokake” series by contemporary ceramic artist Toru Hatta.

“Shirokake,” a name coined by the artist himself, is his distinctive interpretation of the traditional Kohiki technique, in which white slip is applied to a red clay body containing coarse stone particles, followed by a layer of glaze.

Depending on how the white slip is applied, glimpses of the red clay emerge beneath the surface. Subtle variations in the glaze and its natural irregularities give each piece a rich and unique expression.

Fired at high temperatures in a wood-fired kiln, the surface reveals complex textures shaped by the interaction of clay and flame. Strength and delicacy coexist within its solid, substantial form.

From delicate flowers to wild, expressive branches, the vase has a commanding presence that embraces and supports the vitality of plants.

Even without flowers, it stands as a sculptural work in its own right, bringing a quiet sense of strength to any space—a distinctive quality of Toru Hatta's work.
