The "Ash-Glazed Jar" by contemporary ceramic artist Aki Tamiya is a work that transforms in the kiln as the jar becomes buried in ash while continuously being fired with firewood in a wood-fired kiln, embodying a rich expression created solely by the power of nature. Aki Tamiya pours strong passion into the Ash-Glazed Jar, as if witnessing the moment when earth and fire intersect, and Rurbanism also feels the infinite possibilities that reside within this work.

The jars shaped by hand have unique personalities, each different like a person. The colors and textures born from being buried in ash and exposed to high temperatures are unlike any other. The artist continues to create the Ash-Glazed Jar with insights and imagination that seem to see through the accidents of nature.

This is Aki Tamiya's first time creating a flowerpot from the Ash-Glazed Jar, making this a highly experimental and valuable collection of works.

Aki Tamiya

Born in Tokyo. In 1996, she established a kiln in Mashiko and began her artistic activities while interacting with Seiji Imanari and the late Ryo Aoki. In 1999, she completed a wood-fired kiln in Shizuoka and continues to create pottery to this day.

The jars and vases created with a focus on unglazed stoneware reflect the strength of the earth itself while exuding a quiet presence. Their simple yet profound appearance adds a serene tension to the space, living on as art pieces that embody a primitive aesthetic.
