This is a flower vase by contemporary ceramic artist Michikazu Sakai, where the soft white and earthy expressions beautifully harmonize. The raw clay is coated with white slip, and then layered with glaze before being carefully fired in a wood kiln, resulting in a gentle white that subtly reveals the color of the clay underneath. Slight nuances and fluctuations overlap to present a unique expression.

Rurbanism will continue to introduce various works by Michikazu Sakai, including flower vases and plant pots.

Michikazu Sakai

Born in 1975 in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture. He studied under Bizen pottery artist Satoru Masamune and built a climbing kiln in his hometown in 1997. He currently resides in Kagawa Prefecture, continuing his pottery work.

The works created in the wood kiln showcase a variety of styles, including the rich expressions of Oribe, white slip, and unique glazes made from mimosa ash. The flower vases reflect the power of earth and flame, providing depth and a quiet presence to the space when flowers are arranged in them.

The flower vases, imbued with the blessings of nature, add a soft warmth to everyday life and gently nourish the hearts of those who spend their days with flowers.
